Hello, my name is Kim and if you’re interested in venturing into China for a day’s shopping I will be your guide.
I am British and I have lived in Hong Kong for 7 years. Soon after I arrived I was taken by a friend on my first shopping trip to the Lo Wu Commercial Centre in Shenzhen, China. Being an avid shopper I loved my first shopping experience in Shenzhen, which is conveniently situated just over the border as you step into China.
I started taking friends and some of our many visitors on day trips to China. My trips became so popular they eventually developed into a regular business, taking tourists who would like to experience the fun of shopping in China, but without the worry factor of not knowing where to go to buy a quality item amongst the many shops and stalls selling similar items. Knowing the market value of most items also prevents the risk of being ripped off by the locals who expect you to bargain with them, but are very good at convincing tourists that items are worth far more than their actual value!
Shenzhen used to be a small town and has developed over recent years into a thriving city with a huge commercial centre of its own. It is popular for business and tourists alike, but is especially known as the Mecca for shoppers who like to purchase handbags, wallets and watches.
8.5 HOUR SHENZHEN SHOPPING TOUR
Shenzhen is a fantastic place to shop - who wouldn’t love the myriad of shops selling everything from handbags - of every size and description – to watches and all types of jewellery and pearls. Ready to wear clothing and shoes are available in abundance, and personal tailoring available for anyone wishing to have a favourite item copied, or a made to measure suit which can be posted back to Hong Kong, or to your home country if you’re limited to a short visit.
A walk through the fabric hall is as overwhelming as it is delightful with the many varied fabrics available from the lightest Thai silks to best quality wool and cashmere. If an hour or more can be spared for a little (more) indulgence there are beauty shops galore offering mani/pedi’s, massages, even a quick wash & blow-dry so you can go home feeling totally refreshed.
A typical day trip to China
The journey to China commences at Hung Hom station in Kowloon. I usually meet my groups of 1-4 people at 9.30am at Starbucks on the Mezzanine floor of the station. There we can meet over a coffee and discuss what items you are interested in buying, if we have not already done this over email in advance.
A pick-up from your hotel at 9.30am can be arranged if preferred, but as this would take longer it means less shopping time in Shenzhen.
We take the MTR from Hung Hom to the border station of Lo Wu, which takes approximately 45 minutes. During this time exit and entry forms to China will be provided for completion by all parties. A visa is required for entry to China, which if not already held can be purchased at the border for citizens of many countries.
Leaving Hong Kong and entering China can take anything from 15/20minutes to up to an hour at busy times or during busy holiday periods.
During the day I will be at your disposal to guide you to the best shops where you will be able to view and buy the best value goods at a fair price. A point to remember - if you are buying good quality goods they may still cost more than a similar basic item without the label, but these items will cost a fraction of the price you’d pay elsewhere.
There are several good restaurants to stop for lunch or even just for a tea, coffee or soft drink. It is usual to book a table when we first arrive if you wish to eat at one of the Chinese restaurants as they get very booked-up at lunch times.
The trip ends when we return to Hung Hom MTR station and I take you to the correct taxi rank for your hotel location. (There are different queues for taxis to addresses on Kowloon or those crossing to Hong Kong island.)
